How to Cleanse Healing Crystals: Cleansing Rituals for Healing Crystals

In the world of healing crystals, cleansing and cleaning are two different actions. Cleaning is to physically clean off your crystal with water or a rag when it gets dusty. Cleansing is the act of clearing the crystal on a metaphysical and spiritual level. Cleansing is the topic of this article.

Before using a crystal it is important to use a cleansing ritual to clear the crystal of any energy or vibrations it may have absorbed before it found its way to you. Here at New Moon Beginnings, we cleanse all of our crystals before sending it to you. However, crystals attract and absorb energy and vibrations--both negative and positive--from each person and space they come in contact with during their journey. Therefore, we recommend cleansing your crystals before using them even if you just received them from New Moon Beginnings.

There are several different ways to cleanse your crystals. It is important to choose a cleansing ritual that aligns with your own personal feelings and intuitions. What works for one person may not be ideal for another. Use whatever you have available and what feels right, and your crystals will be ready for the work you intend to do.

Cleansing your Crystals by Smudging

Smudging is an ancient practice used by many cultures to cleanse and purify places, people, and objects. It involves burning certain dried herbs, incense, or wood and enveloping your healing crystal in a purifying smoke bath. At New Moon Beginnings, we prefer to use Palo Santo, which translates to “holy wood” in Spanish. Other examples are juniper, lavender, mugwort, and rosemary. One traditional Native American way to smudge uses white sage.

To smudge your crystal, heat your smudge bundle or stick with a lighter or match until it catches fire. Let it burn for about 20 seconds, and then gently blow out the flame. This will create the cleansing smoke. Allow the smoke to envelope your crystal or crystals while thinking or saying a personal mantra of positive energy and cleansing. Something as simple as “please remove and release any negative energy” works well. Once finished, be sure to lay the smudge ina fireproof container, such as an abalone shell or ceramic cauldron, until it stops burning and cools. You should also use a fireproof container to catch the ashes.

Cleansing your Crystals with Selenite

Selenite, named for Selene the Greek moon goddess, does not hold on to negative energy, and is one of the few stones that does not need to be cleared. Selenite has a high vibrational energy and is a stone of protection. It is an ideal stone for cleansing because not only does it unblock stagnant energy and remove negative energy, it also amplifies the healing properties and powers of any crystals placed on it. To use selenite to cleanse a crystal, place the crystal on a piece of selenite for at least 6 hours. You can place more than one crystal on a piece of selenite and cleanse them all simultaneously, as long as each crystal is in contact with the selenite. Selenite plates or bowls make great cleansing tools as they can safely hold your crystals.

Cleansing your Crystals in Water

Using running water is a natural and simple way to cleanse your crystals. Holding a crystal in natural running water, such as streams, rivers, or the ocean, clears the crystal of negative vibrations and energy. You can even use water from a faucet to clear the crystal if natural running water is unavailable. Setting your stones out in the rain is also a great and natural way to cleanse with water. PLEASE NOTE that some stones and crystals should not be cleansed in water, and we created a partial list for you to review.

While using water is an effective way to clear many stones, make sure your crystal is not water soluble before using water as a way to cleanse. Certain stones, such as selenite, kyanite, and malachite, can dissolve, discolor, or even become toxic if in contact with water.

Cleansing your Crystals in the Earth

Another natural way to cleanse your crystals is by “returning them to the earth.” Crystals that are not soluble can be buried in soil. Please be sure to clearly mark the spot where it is buried so you don’t lose your crystal! You can also place your crystal in the soil or the branches of a healthy house plant. Keep the crystal in the soil or by the plant for at least 24 hours.

Cleansing your Crystals with Moonlight or Sunlight

You can also place your crystal in sunlight or moonlight to cleanse it. The full moon is the most powerful phase of the moon for cleansing and charging. Sunlight on a clear day can also be cleansing, but can eventually fade the color of some crystals if used too often. Stones that should never be put in the sun include amethyst, amber, and jet. Many people believe that the moon is a more feminine source of energy, while the sun is a more masculine source. You might want to keep this in mind when choosing these options for cleansing. PLEASE NOTE that some stones and crystals should not be cleansed in sunlight, and we created a partial list for you to review.

Cleansing your Crystals with Sound

Sound can be used to clear your stone of unwanted or negative vibrations. It can also be used to reinvigorate the flow of the energy within and surrounding the crystals. Some useful sounds to use are singing bowls, tuning forks, bells, or symbols. Place the crystal in the singing bowl, or hit the tuning fork off the crystal. The key is to surround the stone with the sound in order to realign the vibrations, and clear the stone of negative energies. Be careful using this method with fragile crystals that could break when hit with a tuning fork.
