Geology & Composition: Howlite is a calcium borosilicate mineral that forms in evaporite deposits, which are created when ancient lakes and inland seas slowly dried up, leaving behind layers of boron-rich minerals. Over time, Howlite grows within these deposits as rounded nodules, often with a lumpy, cauliflower-like outer shape. Inside, it is a soft, porcelain-white stone marked with delicate gray to black veins that run through it in a natural web-like pattern, giving each piece a look reminiscent of marble. The mineral was first identified in 1868 in Nova Scotia, Canada, and was named after Henry How, the Canadian chemist and geologist who discovered it. Our White Howlite comes from the United States, where the most significant deposits are found in Southern California. The borate-rich desert regions of California, including areas in the Mojave Desert and around Death Valley, formed from ancient lake beds and are among the world's most important sources of boron minerals, including Howlite. American Howlite is known for its clean white color and striking natural veining. Because Howlite is naturally porous, it absorbs dye easily and is frequently dyed to imitate stones like Turquoise. Our White Howlite is left in its natural white state, so you can enjoy its true color and veining just as nature formed it. Each piece is one of a kind, with its own unique pattern of veins. Howlite has a hardness of 3 to 3.5 on the Mohs scale, making it a softer stone that can scratch more easily than harder crystals.
HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR HOWLITE: At a Mohs hardness of 3 to 3.5, Howlite is one of the softer stones in a collection and will scratch easily, so keep it stored separately from harder crystals. It is also porous, which means it readily absorbs liquids and can stain, so avoid water, oils, perfume, and household cleaners. A wipe with a soft dry cloth is all it needs.
METAPHYSICAL PROPERTIES:
- Intentions: Calming, Awareness, Connection
- Chakra: Third Eye
- Zodiac: Gemini
- Elements: Air
Metaphysical Properties of White Howlite: White Howlite is an extremely Calming stone. It is soothing to an overactive mind and clears away negative thoughts, which is why it is so often reached for at the end of a long day or during a period when everything feels a little too loud. It attunes you to your spirituality and aids in achieving your spiritual goals. It stills the mind and is helpful for meditation, and it works through the Third Eye, the center of inner sight, opening your mind to peaceful dreams and deeper Awareness. It also prepares the mind for wisdom, which is a gentle way of saying it clears the ground before anything else can grow there. Howlite fosters patience with others and with yourself, and helps to cool anger, making it a stone of genuine Connection as well as calm. Carried on the Element of Air, its energy is light and clarifying rather than heavy. It is especially well known for supporting calm and restful sleep.
Cat Sculpture Meaning: Cats have carried the same associations across almost every culture that kept them. In ancient Egypt they were sacred to Bastet, goddess of the home and protector of the household, and the seated upright cat is the exact posture Egyptian artisans carved and cast for thousands of years, alert and composed, a guardian watching over the house. Across folk traditions since, the cat has stood for independence, self-possession, and a particular kind of knowing: the sense that a cat sees something in the room you have not noticed yet.
The pairing with Howlite is about patience. Howlite is the stone that fosters patience with others and with yourself and cools anger before it builds, and the cat is the most patient animal in any house. A cat will sit at a window for an hour watching nothing in particular, entirely unbothered by the fact that nothing is happening. That capacity to wait without restlessness is the exact quality Howlite encourages. In its pale, marbled white, this one also reads almost like a small carved statue, which suits a bedside table, a meditation corner, or a bathroom shelf where its calm, quiet presence fits the room. Howlite is particularly associated with restful sleep, so a cat keeping watch beside your bed is a fitting place for it.
