Its color comes from a natural combination of trace amounts of iron trapped within the crystal structure and long-term exposure to natural radiation from surrounding rocks. Together, these create color centers that absorb light and give Amethyst its signature shades, ranging from soft lavender to deep royal violet. Amethyst often grows inside geodes, which form when gas bubbles trapped in cooling lava leave hollow pockets in volcanic rock. Over millions of years, silica-rich water seeps into these cavities and slowly deposits crystal after crystal, building up the sparkling purple linings and clusters Amethyst is famous for. It also forms in hydrothermal veins, where hot, mineral-rich fluids move through cracks deep in the earth. Our Amethyst comes from Brazil, one of the largest and most important Amethyst producers in the world. Much of Brazil's Amethyst is mined in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul, where ancient basalt lava flows that formed around 130 million years ago hold enormous geodes, some tall enough for a person to stand inside. Other deposits are found in states such as Minas Gerais and Bahia. Brazilian Amethyst is valued for its beautiful range of purple tones, its clarity, and its abundance of well-formed crystals. Each piece is natural and one of a kind, with its own depth of color and natural variations, including lighter and darker zones within the same stone. Amethyst has a hardness of 7 on the Mohs scale, making it a durable stone that holds up well to everyday handling.
