Geology & Composition: Seraphinite is the gem-quality variety of clinochlore, a magnesium iron silicate belonging to the chlorite mineral family. It forms in metamorphic rock, where existing minerals are reworked under heat and pressure over enormous stretches of time, and the silvery fibers running through it are genuine crystal growth rather than surface effect. Those fibers are mica-like plates aligned within the stone, and when light strikes them at the right angle they flare into the feathered patterns that earned this stone its name from the seraphim. Our Seraphinite comes from the Korshunovskoye deposit in the Lake Baikal region of eastern Siberia, which is remarkable because it is essentially the only commercial source on earth. Its deep green comes from the iron and magnesium in its chemistry, and the color ranges from near-black through forest green to a lighter sage. At 2 to 4 on the Mohs scale it is quite soft, similar to a fingernail at the low end, which is why it takes a soft satiny polish rather than a glassy one and why it is always shaped into beads or cabochons.
