Geology & Composition: Rhodonite is a manganese silicate, and manganese is responsible for everything interesting about it. The element gives the stone its rose to deep pink color, which is where the name comes from, since rhodon is the Greek word for rose. Rhodonite forms in metamorphic rock, typically where manganese-rich sediments have been reworked by heat and pressure over enormous spans of time, and it is often found near manganese ore deposits. As it sits near the earth's surface, some of that manganese oxidizes and darkens, which creates the black manganese oxide flecking and veining running through these beads. That black is the signature that tells collectors they are looking at genuine rhodonite. Our Rhodonite comes from Madagascar, an island whose ancient metamorphic terrain has made it one of the world's great gemstone sources, and whose rhodonite is known for its soft dusty rose and salmon tones rather than the harder bubblegum pink seen in some other material. The tan, khaki, and gray-green you see mixed through these beads come from the surrounding host rock and from other minerals caught up during formation, most often quartz and feldspar, and they are what give this material its gentler, earthier character. Rhodonite measures 5.5 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale, sturdy enough for everyday wear while still soft enough to take the smooth satiny polish you see here.
METAPHYSICAL PROPERTIES:
- Intentions: Love, Compassion, Forgiveness
- Chakra: Heart, Root
- Zodiac: Taurus
- Elements: Earth, Fire
Metaphysical Properties of Rhodonite: Rhodonite calms and balances the emotions, and it is best known as a stone of compassion in the fullest sense of that word. It helps with self-reflection, leading you to recognize and appreciate your own talents and inner strength, which is often the part people find hardest. Rhodonite can also bring you to accept your purpose and to begin or re-energize your spiritual journey.
What makes this stone distinctive is that it refuses to stop at yourself. While it inspires self-love, it inspires love for others and for your community just as strongly, and those two are treated as the same work rather than separate ones. Rhodonite is regarded as one of the very best Heart Chakra stones, and it is said to remove energy blockages surrounding the heart, which is the kind of quiet clearing that makes everything else possible.
It is especially valued in relationships. Rhodonite is carried to soothe difficulties between people and to facilitate unconditional love, and it has strong healing vibrations that bring you toward forgiving yourself and others. Grounded in the Root and carrying both Earth and Fire, it gives that softness a backbone, because forgiveness takes more steadiness and more courage than it is usually given credit for.
About the Heart Chakra: The Heart Chakra, also known as the Anahata, is located in the center of the chest. It is the chakra most in tune with your emotions, especially love. When the Heart Chakra is aligned, it helps to open you to new experiences and new relationships of all kinds. It also helps to ease past hurts, and helps you learn and grow from negative experiences. The Heart Chakra is the chakra of compassion, allowing you to forgive and be forgiven. It helps bring love to you, and helps you to push loving energy into the universe.
About the Root Chakra: The Root Chakra, also known as the Muladhara or Base Chakra, is located at the bottom of the spine and is the foundation of our bodies and souls. Your Root Chakra contains your basic life force. When it is balanced, it helps to ground you and provides stability. An open Root Chakra allows energy to flow through your body and offers a sense of safety and security. The Root Chakra emanates the energy of the Element of Earth. A balanced Root Chakra helps to ground the other chakras and allows you to feel comfortable in your body and your surroundings. This is what keeps Rhodonite from being merely soft, since the Root gives the open heart something solid to stand on.
How to Wear It: Rhodonite is traditionally worn on the left wrist (non-dominant hand). In crystal practice, the left wrist is your receiving side, drawing energy inward, while the right wrist (dominant hand) projects energy outward. So much of Rhodonite's work is inward that the left wrist is its natural home, whether that is recognizing your own talents, accepting your purpose, or finally forgiving yourself for something. The left side is also closest to the heart, which suits one of the great Heart Chakra stones, and it is a lovely choice for meditation, journaling, and the quiet end of a hard day. Move it to your right wrist (dominant hand) when the work turns outward. Rhodonite is carried for soothing relationship difficulties and for extending compassion to other people and to your community, and the right wrist sends that warmth out with you into a conversation you have been dreading, a reconciliation you are ready for, or a day when you want to meet people gently.
One practical tip, whichever side you choose. Your non-dominant wrist takes less daily wear, so less flexing, catching, and pulling, which helps the elastic band and knots last much longer. If the wrist your intention calls for happens to be your dominant one, that is perfectly fine, just be a little more mindful with it.
