Amber is a natural form of fossilized resin, so each stone will be unique and have variations in natural characteristics such as Size, Shape, Inclusions, and Color. Raw Blue Amber looks very different from polished Blue Amber. In ordinary light these pieces are tan, brown, or nearly black, with a rough weathered crust, and the amber itself is usually visible only where a piece has fractured open. Under UV light, freshly broken surfaces fluoresce a brilliant blue while crusted areas stay dull, so most pieces glow in patches rather than all over. The strength and coverage of the fluorescence varies naturally from piece to piece. Pieces may also contain natural inclusions of ancient plant matter, bark fragments, sediment, or internal fractures, all original to the resin.

Geology & Composition: Every piece of raw amber you hold started as a wound. Resin is a tree's defense, thick sap released to seal a break in the bark or trap an insect before it can burrow in. It runs down the trunk, hardens in the air, and in almost every case simply rots away with the tree. What happened in Sumatra is the rare exception. Roughly 15 to 20 million years ago, tropical forests dominated by trees of the Dipterocarpaceae family, most likely the genus Shorea, were producing resin in enormous quantity. Rivers and floods buried those resin flows fast, under sediment and out of reach of oxygen. Over millions of years, burial heat and pressure drove off the volatile compounds and locked what remained into a stable polymer. That is the moment resin becomes amber, and it is the same process that turned the surrounding plant matter into the coal seams the amber is mined from today.

The Sumatran deposits sit in the Sinamar Formation of Jambi Province, in the foothills of the Bukit Barisan range, and the amber comes out of the ground alongside coal rather than from any kind of vein or pocket. That is why raw pieces arrive with a rough weathered crust still on them, an oxidized skin formed where the outside of the resin reacted with its surroundings over geological time. Break a piece open and the interior is a different material entirely, glassy and deep cognac. Most of the fractured faces on these stones are natural, from the movement of the sediment around them, which is why so many arrive already showing their interior. Amber is not a mineral at all. It has no crystal structure, no repeating internal lattice, and no chemical formula in the way quartz or calcite does. It is organic, which is why it is so surprisingly light in the hand and so soft, sitting at just 2 to 2.5 on the Mohs scale.

ABOUT THE BLUE FLUORESCENCE: The blue is fluorescence, not color. Under a UV light (365nm works best) or in strong direct sunlight, the amber absorbs ultraviolet light and re-emits it as visible blue. The effect comes from perylene and other naturally occurring aromatic compounds within the resin, with surface light-scattering adding to it. Nothing has been added to these stones and the effect will never fade or wash off. Fluorescence strength varies naturally between pieces, and the effect is most dramatic in a dark room. A UV flashlight is not included.

HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR BLUE AMBER: Store it separately from other crystals, ideally in a soft pouch, since almost anything in your collection is hard enough to scratch it. Keep it away from perfume, hairspray, alcohol, nail polish remover, and household cleaners, all of which can dull or damage the surface. Avoid prolonged heat and direct sunlight, and never use an ultrasonic cleaner. A wipe with a soft dry cloth is all it needs. Handled gently, a piece of amber will look the same in fifty years as it does today.
