Blue Amber varies considerably from piece to piece. In ordinary light, some stones read deep cognac or root beer brown while others are nearly black, and many show warm red or amber tones where light passes through. Most pieces contain natural inclusions of ancient plant matter, bark fragments, or small internal fractures, all original to the resin. The strength of the blue fluorescence also varies naturally between pieces.

Geology & Composition: Amber is not a mineral, which makes it one of the more unusual things in any crystal collection. It is fossilized tree resin, an organic material with no crystal structure at all, which is why it is so light in the hand and so soft compared to the stones around it. It begins as resin, the thick sap a tree releases to seal a wound or fend off insects. Most resin simply decays. Occasionally a flow gets buried quickly under sediment in an oxygen-poor environment, and over millions of years the heat and pressure of burial drive off the volatile compounds and lock the rest into a stable polymer. That slow hardening is what turns resin into amber, and it is also what preserves whatever the resin trapped on its way down the trunk: bark, leaf fragments, insects, bubbles of ancient air.

Indonesia's amber comes from the coal-bearing sediments of Sumatra, with the best known deposits in the Sinamar Formation of Jambi Province, in the foothills of the Bukit Barisan range. The material is Miocene in age, and its parent tree belonged to the Dipterocarpaceae family, most likely the genus Shorea, a tropical hardwood. That matters because it makes Indonesian amber chemically distinct from the famous Dominican blue amber, which formed from the extinct Hymenaea protera tree instead. Indonesian blue amber was only discovered commercially in the 2010s, and its fluorescence is often even stronger than the Dominican material. At a Mohs hardness of 2 to 2.5, amber is soft. It scratches easily and should be kept away from harder stones.

ABOUT THE BLUE FLUORESCENCE: The blue is fluorescence, not color. Under a UV light (365nm works best) or in strong direct sunlight, the amber absorbs ultraviolet light and re-emits it as visible blue. The effect comes from perylene and other naturally occurring aromatic compounds within the resin, with surface light-scattering adding to it. Nothing has been added to these stones and the effect will never fade or wash off. Fluorescence strength varies naturally between pieces, and the effect is most dramatic in a dark room. A UV flashlight is not included.

HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR BLUE AMBER: Store it separately from other crystals, ideally in a soft pouch, since almost anything in your collection is hard enough to scratch it. Keep it away from perfume, hairspray, alcohol, nail polish remover, and household cleaners, all of which can dull or damage the surface. Avoid prolonged heat and direct sunlight, and never use an ultrasonic cleaner. A wipe with a soft dry cloth is all it needs. Handled gently, a piece of amber will look the same in fifty years as it does today.
