Copal ranges from nearly colorless through pale honey to deeper gold, and most pieces are quite translucent. Because it forms as flows and drips rather than as crystals, pieces tend to be elongated, flattened, or shard-like rather than blocky. Natural inclusions of bark, plant debris, dark speckling, internal fractures, and cloudy zones are common and original to the resin. SOME (not all) pieces contain trapped insects, most often small flies, midges, ants, or gnats, and these are usually easiest to see with a magnifier or a light held behind the stone. Because every piece is different and these are not individually selected, insect inclusions are not guaranteed with any particular order.

WHAT IS COPAL, EXACTLY? Copal and amber are the same material at two different stages. Resin leaves the tree, hardens, gets buried, and over an extremely long time loses its volatile compounds and polymerizes into the hard, stable material we call amber. Copal is that process caught partway. It is genuine tree resin, just young enough that it has not fully hardened. Because polymerization happens gradually, there is no exact moment when one becomes the other, which is why the two terms overlap so much in the trade. We list ours as Copal because that is what it is. It is softer than amber, more transparent, and considerably more affordable, and it is a real and beautiful material in its own right rather than a substitute for something else.

Geology & Composition: Resin is a tree's defense. When bark splits or an insect begins to burrow, the tree floods the wound with a thick, sticky flow that hardens in the air and seals the damage. That is the whole origin of this material, and it explains its shape: copal forms as drips, runs, and flattened flows down a trunk, never as crystals, which is why raw pieces come out elongated, wedge-shaped, or shard-like rather than blocky.

Madagascar's copal comes from Hymenaea verrucosa, a leguminous tree of the island's eastern forests. It is worth knowing that this is the same genus that produced the famous Dominican amber, so the material is a close relative of true amber rather than a lookalike. Unlike amber, which is mined from buried sedimentary deposits, Malagasy copal is gathered from the forest floor, recovered from soil and leaf litter beneath the trees that produced it. Resin from these forests has been traded for a very long time. The oldest known worked pieces of East African Hymenaea resin date to roughly 2,500 BCE and were found in what is now Iraq, and the earliest examples containing trapped insects, made into beads, date to around 2,000 BCE in Egypt. This is a material with a genuinely ancient place in human trade, long before anyone was distinguishing copal from amber.

How old is the copal itself? Honestly, less settled than most sellers suggest. Published estimates for Malagasy material have ranged from a few million years down to a few hundred, and recent analysis points firmly toward the young end: Madagascar's soil, climate, and litter organisms break resin down rather than preserving it, which appears to cap survival at a few centuries rather than millennia. We describe ours as copal, or subfossil resin, rather than putting a number on it. What we can say for certain is what it is: real tree resin, gathered where it fell, partway through a hardening process that would take millions of years to complete.

Because it is unfinished, copal behaves differently from amber in ways you can observe directly. It is softer, sitting at roughly 1.5 to 2 on the Mohs scale where amber reaches 2 to 2.5. It softens or turns tacky when acetone touches it, while amber shrugs the same drop off. Heated with a hot point, it melts more readily and gives off a sweeter resinous scent than amber's sharper one. None of these are flaws. They are the fingerprints of a younger material, and they are how collectors tell the two apart.

HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR COPAL: Copal is softer than amber and needs more care, not less. Store it separately from other crystals in a soft pouch, since nearly everything in a collection can scratch it. Keep it well away from acetone, nail polish remover, alcohol, perfume, hairspray, and household cleaners, all of which will soften or damage the surface. Avoid heat and prolonged direct sunlight, and never use an ultrasonic cleaner. A wipe with a soft dry cloth is all it needs. Copal can develop fine surface crazing with age, which is natural to the material.
