PLEASE NOTE: Raw Obsidian can have genuinely sharp edges. The same property that made it valuable to ancient toolmakers means a freshly broken piece can cut, so handle it carefully, keep it out of reach of small children, and avoid carrying it loose in a pocket with your hands. If you would prefer a smooth stone, our tumbled Black Obsidian is the better choice.

Geology & Composition: Black Obsidian is a natural volcanic glass that forms when silica-rich lava erupts and cools so quickly that crystals have no time to grow. This rapid cooling locks the minerals into a smooth, glassy state, which gives Obsidian its signature mirror-like shine and its distinctive conchoidal fracture, the curved, shell-like break that lets it hold remarkably sharp edges. Chemically, it is made mostly of silicon dioxide (around 70 percent or more), with its deep black color coming from tiny particles of magnetite and other iron-bearing minerals suspended throughout the glass.

Because it has no crystal structure at all, Obsidian is technically a mineraloid rather than a mineral, which makes it one of the more unusual things in a crystal collection. It is also geologically young. Obsidian slowly devitrifies over time, meaning it gradually crystallizes and loses its glassy character, so almost no Obsidian older than about 20 million years survives anywhere on earth.

Our Black Obsidian comes from Mexico, one of the world’s most important and historic sources of this stone. Mexico sits along the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, a chain of volcanoes stretching across the center of the country, and the states of Jalisco and Hidalgo are especially known for high-quality Obsidian deposits. Obsidian from this region has been prized for thousands of years. Ancient Mesoamerican cultures, including the Aztecs and the people of Teotihuacan, mined it for tools, blades, mirrors, and ceremonial objects, and it remained one of the most valuable materials in the region’s trade networks. Black Obsidian has a hardness of 5 to 5.5 on the Mohs scale, which makes it durable enough to handle and display, though like all glass it can chip if dropped onto a hard surface.

Black Obsidian Meaning and Properties: Black Obsidian is one of the best stones for protection. It is a powerful cleanser of negative energy. Black Obsidian helps to remove negativity from your environment, and also from your emotions and mind. Because of its protection properties, Black Obsidian cleanses your mind and teaches you emotional strength. Black Obsidian stimulates the Root Chakra. It is especially helpful for grounding you, spiritually and emotionally. Black Obsidian also helps to connect you to the energy of the Earth, centering you and aligning you with the spirit of nature.

Because of its ability to deflect negativity, Black Obsidian is helpful for clearing energy blockages and aids in bringing truth to the surface to be revealed. In raw form it is particularly suited to holding a space: set a piece by an entryway, in the corners of a room, at the points of a crystal grid, or on an altar, where its protective presence works continuously without needing to be carried.

About the Root Chakra: The Root Chakra, also known as the Muladhara or Base, is located at the bottom of the spine. It is the foundation of our bodies and souls. Your Root Chakra contains your basic life force. When it is balanced, it helps to ground you and provides stability. An open Root Chakra allows energy to flow through your body, and offers a sense of safety and security. The Root Chakra emanates the energy of the Element of Earth. A balanced Root Chakra helps to ground the other chakras, and allows you to feel comfortable in your body and your surroundings.
