Geology & Composition: Black Obsidian is a natural volcanic glass that forms when silica-rich lava erupts and cools so quickly that crystals have no time to grow. This rapid cooling locks the minerals into a smooth, glassy state, which gives Obsidian its signature mirror-like shine and its distinctive conchoidal fracture, the curved, shell-like break that lets it hold remarkably sharp edges. Chemically, it is made mostly of silicon dioxide (around 70 percent or more), with its deep black color coming from tiny particles of magnetite and other iron-bearing minerals suspended throughout the glass. Our Black Obsidian comes from Mexico, one of the world's most important and historic sources of this stone. Mexico sits along the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, a chain of volcanoes stretching across the center of the country, and the states of Jalisco and Hidalgo are especially known for high-quality Obsidian deposits. Obsidian from this region has been prized for thousands of years. Ancient Mesoamerican cultures, including the Aztecs and the people of Teotihuacan, mined it for tools, blades, mirrors, and ceremonial objects, and it remained one of the most valuable materials in the region's trade networks. Each figurine is carved from a solid piece of natural Black Obsidian and polished to bring out its glassy, reflective finish. Black Obsidian has a hardness of 5 to 5.5 on the Mohs scale. Because it is a natural glass, it can chip if dropped or knocked against hard surfaces, so we recommend handling your figurine with care and displaying it where it won't be bumped.

Cat Sculpture Meaning: Cats have carried the same associations across almost every culture that kept them. In ancient Egypt they were sacred to Bastet, goddess of the home and protector of the household, and the seated upright cat is the exact posture Egyptian artisans carved and cast for thousands of years, alert and composed, a guardian watching over the house. Across folk traditions since, the cat has stood for independence, self-possession, and a particular kind of knowing: the sense that a cat sees something in the room you have not noticed yet.

Of all our carved cats, this one comes closest to that ancient image. A glossy black cat seated upright and watching is the oldest protective form there is, and Black Obsidian may be the most fitting stone to carve it from. Both the cat and the stone are associated with seeing in the dark. Obsidian has been used as a scrying mirror for centuries, polished into reflective surfaces by Mesoamerican cultures and later across Europe, valued for its ability to bring hidden truths to the surface. The cat is the animal that has always been credited with the same gift, moving confidently through the dark and noticing what daylight conceals.

Both are protective without being aggressive, holding a boundary simply by being present, and both are at their most powerful when they are perfectly still. Set this one by a door, on a desk, or at the edge of an altar, where a small guardian keeping watch feels exactly right.

About the Root Chakra: The Root Chakra, also known as the Muladhara or Base, is located at the bottom of the spine. It is the foundation of our bodies and souls. Your Root Chakra contains your basic life force. When it is balanced, it helps to ground you and provides stability. An open Root Chakra allows energy to flow through your body, and offers a sense of safety and security. The Root Chakra emanates the energy of the Element of Earth. A balanced Root Chakra helps to ground the other chakras, and allows you to feel comfortable in your body and your surroundings.
