Geology & Composition: Obsidian is not a mineral at all but a natural volcanic glass, and that distinction explains everything about it. When lava with a very high silica content erupts and cools so rapidly that its atoms have no time to arrange themselves into a crystal structure, the result is glass rather than stone. There are no crystals inside a piece of obsidian, which is why it has no grain or cleavage planes and instead breaks along smooth curved surfaces, a pattern geologists call conchoidal fracture. That property gives obsidian edges sharper than surgical steel, and it is why people across the ancient world shaped it into blades, arrowheads, and mirrors for thousands of years. Its deep black comes from tiny amounts of iron and magnesium dispersed evenly through the glass. Our Black Obsidian comes from Mexico, which has been the heart of the obsidian world for millennia. The volcanic belt running through central Mexico produced the material that supplied the Aztec and Mesoamerican world, where obsidian was worked into ceremonial blades and into the polished mirrors used for scrying and divination. Mexican obsidian remains the standard for bead material today, prized for its uniform deep black and its flawless mirror polish. At 5 to 5.5 on the Mohs scale it is softer than quartz and can chip if struck hard, but it takes an exceptionally high polish, which is where that deep shine comes from. 

PLEASE NOTE: To prolong the life of your bracelet, we recommend that you do not swim, shower, or bathe with your bracelet on. Exposure to water can weaken the band and knots. We also recommend taking your bracelet off before going to sleep and not stretching or playing with your bracelet to limit the chances of it getting caught on something and snapping the band.
