What is Turritella Agate?

Turritella Agate is a brown stone that contains fossils that are various shades of brown, black, and white. These fossils are the remains of ancient snails.

Turritella Agate was formed around 50 million years ago!

Turritella Agate is only found in the United States. It is mined in the Green River Formation in Wyoming and parts of Colorado and Utah.

Turritella Agate Meaning

Turritella Agate is a complete misnomer. It is neither made up of Turritella, nor is it a true agate.

It was named Turritella, because it was initially thought that the fossils it contained were ancient sea snails of the Turritella genus. It was later discovered that the fossils are Elimia tenera, a fresh-water snail. However, the name Turritella was already popular, so it did not change.

Turritella Agate is called an agate because its inclusions resemble the banding that appears in true agates. However, they are fossils, not bands of chalcedony, so Turritella Agate is not scientifically an agate.

Scientific Properties of Turritella Agate

Turritella Agate is only found in the United States. The majority is found in the Green River Formation in Wyoming, but specimens can also be found in Colorado and Utah.

Turritella Agate was formed around 50 million years ago!

It formed when the freshwater snailnamed "Elimia tenera" died and its shell sank to the bottom of the lake. Over time, layers of sediment and snail shells were buried. Eventually, the layers were silicified, turning it into a fossil and giving us the Turritella Agate stone that we see today.

As mentioned before, Turritella Agate does not actually contain any of the sea snail, Turritella. Instead, it contains the fossils of Elimia tenera, a freshwater snail.

Turritella Agate is 6.5-7 on Mohs Hardness Scale.
