Geology of Tiger's Eye
Tiger’s Eye is a semi-precious pseudomorph of Quartz that exhibits chatoyancy (the fibers (asbestos) of the stone reflect in a wavering silky luster that can resemble the eye of a cat).
The Quartz present in the stone actually formed as tiny columns rather than being fibers. So the chatoyancy wasn't being caused by the quartz itself, but by tiny inclusions of crocidolite fibers within the quartz columns.
It is formed when parallel veins of Crocidolite (Blue Asbestos) fibers are initially altered into Iron Oxides that are then replaced by silica, which is what results in the more opaque, rich yellow to the brown color we see in regular Tiger’s Eye.
The reflective effect followed the crocidolite, not the quartz. After much study under a microscope, scientists were led to believe they weren't seeing a pseudomorph at all, but the result of many episodes of cracking and sealing.
Basically, as tectonic plate stresses cracked quartz-rich veins, crocidolite fibers would grow from tiny crocidolite grains in the surrounding rock.
Quartz columns growing from the opposite side would wrap up the fibers. The whole process would cycle time over and over again until the veins are left with Tiger's Eye.
