Geology & Composition: Snowflake Obsidian begins as ordinary black obsidian, a natural volcanic glass formed when silica-rich lava cools so rapidly that its atoms never have time to arrange into a crystal structure. The snowflakes are what happens next. Obsidian is unstable over long timescales, and given enough time it slowly begins to devitrify, meaning the glass starts converting into actual crystal. In Snowflake Obsidian, a mineral called cristobalite crystallizes outward from countless individual points within the glass, growing in radiating spherical clusters called spherulites. When the stone is cut and polished, those spheres appear as the soft white and gray bursts across the surface, and their feathery radiating structure is exactly why they look so much like snowflakes. Each one marks a place where the glass slowly started turning back into stone. Our Snowflake Obsidian comes from the USA, where the volcanic regions of the West, particularly Utah, Oregon, and California, produce some of the finest material anywhere, known for crisp white spherulites against a deep black body. At 5 to 5.5 on the Mohs scale, obsidian is softer than quartz and can chip if struck hard, but it takes an exceptionally high polish.

PLEASE NOTE: To prolong the life of your bracelet, we recommend that you do not swim, shower, or bathe with your bracelet on. Exposure to water can weaken the band and knots. We also recommend taking your bracelet off before going to sleep and not stretching or playing with your bracelet to limit the chances of it getting caught on something and snapping the band.

Snowflake Obsidian Meaning and Properties: Snowflake Obsidian is a stone of purity that brings balance to the mind, body, and spirit. It helps to clear negative and self-defeating thoughts by keeping you centered and calm in any situation, and it has a long reputation as a soothing presence that offers comfort during seasons of change. It is grounding in a specific way. Where many Root Chakra stones settle the body, Snowflake Obsidian is said to ground your thinking. It helps you examine harmful thought patterns you may have been repeating without noticing and transform them into something more useful, which is why it is so often reached for by people trying to break a habit of mind rather than a habit of action.

Working through the Third Eye as well as the Root, Snowflake Obsidian pairs that honest self-examination with real steadiness. It offers protection from negative thoughts and vibrations, and its association with transformation is written right into the stone itself, since the white patterns are places where the glass has slowly begun turning into crystal. Change happening quietly, from the inside out.

About the Root Chakra: The Root Chakra, also known as the Muladhara or Base Chakra, is located at the bottom of the spine and is the foundation of our bodies and souls. Your Root Chakra contains your basic life force. When it is balanced, it helps to ground you and provides stability. An open Root Chakra allows energy to flow through your body and offers a sense of safety and security. The Root Chakra emanates the energy of the Element of Earth. A balanced Root Chakra helps to ground the other chakras and allows you to feel comfortable in your body and your surroundings.

About the Third Eye Chakra: The Third Eye Chakra, also known as the Ajna or Brow Chakra, is located on the forehead between the eyebrows. It is associated with wisdom and spirituality, taking the ability of sight past just what our eyes are able to do and allowing us to be in contact with higher metaphysical and spiritual paths. The Third Eye Chakra allows you to see yourself and others clearly. It connects you with your inner purpose and feelings, and opens you to inspiration and spiritual enlightenment. Paired with the Root, this is what lets Snowflake Obsidian show you a difficult pattern while keeping you steady enough to look at it.

How to Wear It: Snowflake Obsidian is traditionally worn on the left wrist (non-dominant hand). In crystal practice, the left wrist is your receiving side, the place energy enters, while the right wrist (dominant hand) projects energy outward. Snowflake Obsidian's work is mostly internal, the quiet business of noticing your own thought patterns and softening the harsh ones, so the left wrist is where it does its clearest work. It is a lovely choice for meditation, journaling, and any moment when you are trying to think more kindly about yourself. Move it to your right wrist (dominant hand) when you need its protective side facing outward. This is a grounding stone through and through, and the right wrist carries that steadiness into a difficult day, an unsettled stretch, or any situation where you want to stay calm rather than reactive.

One practical tip, whichever side you choose. Your non-dominant wrist takes less daily wear, so less flexing, catching, and pulling, which helps the elastic band and knots last much longer. If the wrist your intention calls for happens to be your dominant one, that is perfectly fine, just be a little more mindful with it.
