Geology & Composition: Smoky Quartz is a variety of quartz, made of silicon dioxide, that ranges in color from a soft, translucent tan or gray to a rich chocolate brown and nearly black. It typically grows deep within the earth in granite and pegmatite formations, as well as in hydrothermal veins, where hot, mineral-rich fluids slowly deposit silica over thousands to millions of years. Its signature smoky color comes from a fascinating natural process. Trace amounts of aluminum become trapped in the crystal’s structure as it grows, and over long periods of time, natural radiation from surrounding rocks alters those aluminum atoms, creating what geologists call color centers. These color centers absorb light and give the crystal its warm, smoky tone. The longer and stronger the exposure, the deeper the color becomes.

Our Smoky Quartz comes from Madagascar, one of the world’s most significant sources of fine quartz. The island’s ancient geology holds extensive pegmatite fields, formed as the last and most mineral-rich fraction of cooling magma crystallized slowly underground, producing unusually large and well-formed crystals. Madagascan Smoky Quartz is valued for its clarity and for the warm depth of its color. Many pieces also contain internal veils, partially healed fractures where the crystal broke and continued growing. When light strikes one at the right angle it separates into a spectrum, which is where the rainbow flashes come from. They are entirely natural and a sign of the crystal’s growth history rather than a flaw.
