Geology & Composition: Shungite is an ancient, geologically unique, non-crystalline mineraloid famously sourced from one primary location on Earth: the Karelia region of Russia. Unlike most stones that form from volcanic magma or mineral-rich groundwater, Shungite is believed to have originated from the fossilization of microscopic marine life over two billion years ago.

In the mineralogy world, this shungite is categorized by its carbon purity. While "Elite" or Type I Shungite contains up to 98% carbon, it is extremely brittle and cannot be shaped. The beautifully opaque stones used for these bracelets are crafted from Regular Shungite (Type II or Type III). This specific grade provides the perfect balance of elemental carbon and trace silicate minerals, giving it the structural integrity needed to be carved into perfectly smooth pyramids. What truly makes this material a geological marvel is its internal structure, which contains exceptionally rare, naturally occurring carbon molecules known as fullerenes. Though it is sturdy enough for shaped stones, these carbon-rich beads still have a softer composition than quartz, sitting at a 3.5 to 4 on the Mohs scale.
