Raw Shungite Stone
Have you ever walked into a room and felt like the air itself needed clearing? Our Raw Shungite Stone is the quiet, steady answer to that feeling. Pulled from the ancient carbon beds of Karelia, Russia, near the shores of Lake Onega, this deep charcoal-black stone formed nearly two billion years ago, making it one of the oldest materials you can hold in your hand. Every piece breaks naturally, so each one arrives with its own rugged matte surface and softly angular edges that feel honest and unfussy in the palm. Shungite has long been turned to for cleansing, protection, and grounding, which is why it so often finds a home beside the front door, on a desk next to the computer, or at the center of a crystal grid. Available in sizes from a small pocket stone to a substantial display specimen, it is a simple way to give a space its own quiet anchor.

Geology & Composition: Shungite is not technically a crystal at all, and that is part of what makes it so interesting. It is a mineraloid, meaning it has no repeating internal lattice, and it is built primarily from carbon rather than the silicates and carbonates behind most of the stones on our shelves. It takes its name from the village of Shunga in the Republic of Karelia, in northwestern Russia, where it was first formally described in 1877.
The Karelian deposits sit in the Zaonezhye region along and beneath Lake Onega, and they are genuinely ancient. Geologists date the shungite-bearing rock to roughly 1.9 to 2.1 billion years ago, in the Paleoproterozoic, back when oxygen was only beginning to accumulate in Earth's atmosphere. The leading explanation is that organic-rich sediment settled into shallow basins within an active volcanic rift, then spent the next two billion years under heat and pressure until it hardened into the dense black rock quarried today. Unlike coal, which forms from land plants under gentler conditions, shungite followed an entirely different chemical path and ended up with a non-crystalline, fullerene-like carbon structure found almost nowhere else on the planet. The Zazhoginsky field near Lake Onega remains the world's primary commercial source.
These particular stones are Type III Shungite, commonly sold as Classic Shungite. This is the abundant, matte-black form of the material, not the brittle silver-metallic Elite or Noble variety. Alongside its carbon, Type 3 carries a naturally occurring mineral fraction that can include quartz, mica, aluminosilicates, feldspars, and carbonates. That higher mineral content is exactly what gives Classic Shungite its soft matte finish, its earthy texture, and its greater structural durability compared with high-carbon Elite pieces, which are fragile and cannot be carved.
Because shungite is a naturally variable rock material, carbon and mineral content differ between deposits and even between individual specimens. These stones have not been individually laboratory tested for their precise carbon percentage.
HOW TO CARE FOR RAW SHUNGITE: Raw Type 3 Shungite may leave a temporary, soot-like carbon residue on hands, clothing, or nearby surfaces. This is a natural characteristic of unpolished shungite and not a flaw in the stone. Wipe your piece gently with a dry, soft cloth before first use, and set it on a dish or cloth if you are placing it on light-colored or porous surfaces. Keep it dry and handle it with clean hands to preserve the surface.
METAPHYSICAL PROPERTIES:
- Intentions: Cleansing, Protection, Grounding
- Chakra: Root
- Zodiac: Scorpio, Capricorn, Cancer
- Elements: Air, Fire
Shungite Meaning and Properties: Shungite is one of the most trusted stones for Protection, though its strength feels less like a shield and more like a settled room. It works through the Root Chakra, the center that governs safety, stability, and your sense of belonging in your own body, which is why so many people reach for it first as a Grounding stone. When a day has pulled you in six directions at once, shungite is the one that asks you to come back down and stand still for a moment.
Its Cleansing quality comes from the Elements of Air and Fire working together. Air moves through a space and carries off what has gone stale, while Fire transmutes rather than relocates, burning away what no longer belongs. That combination is why shungite is so often described as an energetic purifier, used to clear heaviness from a room, a practice, or an aura before beginning something new.
In its raw form, shungite is especially valued as a keeper of place. Unpolished stones are frequently set near entryways, tucked into the corners of a room, positioned at the four points of a crystal grid, or kept on an altar, where they act as a quiet boundary for the energy of a space. Held during meditation, the stone's weight and matte texture give the hands something honest to focus on, making it a favorite companion for grounding work, protective practice, and spiritual journeying.
Shungite is also commonly placed near computers, phones, routers, and other electronic devices as part of a metaphysical practice for EMF protection and clearing technological static. This describes Shungite's traditional and spiritual use; it should not be interpreted as scientific proof that the stone blocks or reduces electromagnetic radiation.
About the Root Chakra: The Root Chakra, also known as the Muladhara or Base, is located at the bottom of the spine. It is the foundation of our bodies and souls. Your Root Chakra contains your basic life force. When it is balanced, it helps to ground you and provides stability. An open Root Chakra allows energy to flow through your body, and offers a sense of safety and security. The Root Chakra emanates the energy of the Element of Earth. A balanced Root Chakra helps to ground the other chakras, and allows you to feel comfortable in your body and your surroundings.
