  • Crystal Mineral(s): Selenite (Also Known as: Satin Spar, Gypsum)
  • Origin: Morocco
  • Weight: 1 lb. Bag
  • Size (Approximate): 0.5" to 4"
  • Shape: Natural
  • Surface: Raw
  • Mohs Hardness: 2

Geology & Composition: Selenite is a variety of gypsum, a hydrated calcium sulfate with the formula CaSO₄·2H₂O. That water is not moisture on the surface. It is built into the crystal structure itself, and it explains nearly everything about how this stone behaves. Gypsum forms in evaporite settings, basins where mineral-rich water slowly evaporated and left its dissolved calcium sulfate behind. Ancient shallow seas, salt flats, and inland lagoons all produce it. As those deposits were buried and compressed, groundwater moving through fractures in the rock deposited gypsum in long parallel fibers, growing seam by seam across the opening.

That fibrous growth is what gives this material its silky sheen and the directional striations you can see running the length of every sliver. Turn one in the light and the shimmer travels with it, the same way it does across a piece of silk. It is also why the pieces in this bag come out as slivers and sticks rather than chunks. Because the crystal grows in parallel fibers, it splits naturally along those lines, which is exactly how this material breaks when it is worked. Morocco has become the world's primary source for gypsum of this kind, drawn from the country's arid evaporite beds. At a Mohs hardness of 2, it is soft enough to be marked with a fingernail, which makes it easy to shape and easy to damage in equal measure.

One point of honest terminology: almost all of the "Selenite" sold in the crystal world today, including these pieces, is technically the fibrous satin spar variety of gypsum rather than the clear, blade-like crystals that mineralogists call true Selenite. The names have been used interchangeably in the metaphysical community for decades, and satin spar is what the tradition has always actually referred to.

PLEASE NOTE: Selenite is a form of gypsum, which is a soft and porous mineral. Therefore, it is VERY IMPORTANT to keep your Selenite dry. Gypsum is slightly water soluble, so these pieces should never be washed, soaked, or left anywhere damp. Wipe with a dry, soft cloth only. Raw Selenite will almost always have some form of chips, nicks, flaking, inclusions and other imperfections, and pieces may shed fine fibers or leave a light dust, which is natural to the material. As you use your Selenite for cleansing, scratches and small marks will be unavoidable, but the markings make each piece uniquely yours.

METAPHYSICAL PROPERTIES:

  • Intentions: Cleansing, Protection, Clarity
  • Chakra: Third Eye, Crown
  • Zodiac: Taurus
  • Elements: Air

Selenite Meaning and Properties: Selenite is the ultimate cleanser, and the reason it holds that reputation is simple: it is one of the only stones that never needs cleansing itself. It clears and it keeps clearing, dissolving stagnant and heavy energy from a person, an object, or an entire room, which makes Cleansing the intention that everything else about this stone follows from. It works through the upper centers, the Third Eye and the Crown, which is where its gift for Clarity comes in. Governed by the Element of Air, its energy is light, moving, and clarifying rather than heavy or grounding. It lifts the fog off a cluttered mind and makes room for insight to arrive on its own. Selenite is a longtime favorite for meditation, dreamwork, and any practice where you are trying to hear something quieter than your own noise. It also brings a calm, settled quality to a space, encouraging peaceful sleep and softer dreams, and it works as a Protective presence, holding a clean energetic boundary around wherever it sits.

Selenite also magnifies the energy of any stone placed on or near it while cleansing that stone at the same time, which is what makes small pieces so useful. A sliver tucked beside another crystal does real work.

HOW TO USE SELENITE SLIVERS AND CHIPS:

  • Cleanse your other crystals. Set tumbled stones, jewelry, or crystal points directly on a bed of slivers overnight, or scatter chips in the bottom of a bowl and rest your pieces on top.
  • Place them in the corners of a room. Four slivers, one in each corner, is one of the oldest and simplest ways to hold a clear space. The same works for a car, a desk drawer, or a closet.
  • Build a crystal grid. Selenite is the classic choice for grid points and connecting lines, because it amplifies whatever stone sits at the center.
  • Keep one by the door. A sliver in a dish by the entryway clears keys, rings, and whatever else you set down when you come home.
  • Put one under your pillow or on the nightstand. Selenite's calming quality makes it a favorite for restful sleep and dreamwork.
  • Use them in your own making. Slivers work well in jewelry, wire wrapping, resin, and craft projects, and the bag size makes experimenting affordable.
  • Share them. A pound divides easily into gift bags, party favors, workshop giveaways, or shop samples.
