Geology & Composition: Selenite is a crystalline variety of the mineral gypsum, formed over millions of years through the slow evaporation of ancient saltwater bodies. These specific slabs are sourced from the mineral-rich Tafilalt region of Morocco, near the edge of the Sahara Desert, where the unique environment allows for the growth of massive, high-quality deposits.This variety is technically known as Satin Spar due to its fibrous, columnar crystal habit. When light hits the surface of the slab, it reflects off these parallel internal fibers, creating a shimmering, silky luster known as "chatoyancy" or the "catÕs eye" effect. Because it is a hydrous mineral (containing water in its chemical structure), Selenite is incredibly softÑrated only a 2 on the Mohs scaleÑmeaning it can be scratched with a fingernail and should always be kept away from water to preserve its integrity.
