Geology & Composition: Rose Quartz is a variety of quartz, silicon dioxide with the formula SiO₂, and the same mineral family that gives us Clear Quartz, Amethyst, and Citrine. What separates it is where the color comes from, and the answer turned out to be more interesting than anyone expected.

For a long time the pink was credited to trace manganese or titanium. Modern analysis points instead to microscopic fibrous inclusions of a mineral related to dumortierite, threaded in such fine quantities through the quartz that they are invisible to the eye but scatter light in a way that reads as pink. Those same inclusions are the reason Rose Quartz is nearly always cloudy or translucent rather than clear, and why the color is so evenly distributed through a piece rather than concentrated in bands.

Rose Quartz forms in pegmatites, which are coarse-grained igneous rocks that crystallize from the last and most mineral-rich fraction of a cooling magma body. Because that fluid is slow to cool and full of dissolved elements, pegmatites produce unusually large crystals, and Rose Quartz typically grows there in massive form, meaning great solid veins and pods rather than individual terminated points. That is why nearly all Rose Quartz on the market is raw broken material, tumbled, or carved rather than sold as natural crystal points.

Madagascar is one of the world's foremost sources, with its pegmatite belts producing consistently well-colored material. At a Mohs hardness of 7, Rose Quartz is durable enough for daily carry and everyday handling, though prolonged direct sunlight can gradually fade the pink over time.
