Geology & Composition: Peacock Ore is the common name for Chalcopyrite, a copper iron sulfide mineral that is a primary ore of copper. These specific specimens are sourced from the mineral-rich region of Mexico, which is globally recognized for producing Chalcopyrite with exceptionally vivid and stable color displays. In these Mexican deposits, the ore forms deep underground in high-temperature hydrothermal veins, often alongside other minerals like Quartz (White inclusions) or Pyrite (Gold inclusions). While its base color is a brassy, metallic yellow, it is famous for the stunning rainbow "tarnish" that forms on its surface. This iridescence occurs through a natural oxidation process; when the mineral is exposed to air and moisture, a thin layer of secondary minerals (like limonite or goethite) forms. This microscopic layer causes light to bounce and interfere with itself—a phenomenon similar to oil on a puddle—which scatters light into the brilliant magentas and blues you see like the color of peacocks feathers.
