Geology & Composition: Lepidolite belongs to the mica family, and it's technically a lithium-rich variety known as polylithionite or trilithionite. It doesn't form the way most crystals do, slowly cooling from a single mineral solution. Instead, it grows inside pegmatites, coarse-grained rock bodies that form when the last, most mineral-concentrated leftovers of a cooling granite magma get squeezed into cracks in the surrounding rock. Because that leftover fluid is so rich in rare elements like lithium, cesium, and rubidium, pegmatites are where many of the world's most unusual minerals are born.

Brazil's Minas Gerais is home to one of the richest pegmatite belts on the planet, with well known lithium bearing districts around Governador Valadares and Araçuaí producing some of the finest lepidolite in the world. Rather than forming as large, isolated crystals, this raw lepidolite grew tightly intergrown with quartz and feldspar within the pegmatite, cooling into a dense, granular mass of countless tiny mica flakes. That fine, sugary texture is what gives each piece its soft, speckled lilac-gray color and subtle sparkle as light catches the mica throughout the stone, a solid, compact record of the mineral-rich fluids that once moved through this rock.
