Geology & Composition: Iowaite is a rare magnesium iron hydroxide chloride mineral that belongs to the hydrotalcite group. While it was originally discovered in the United States (Iowa), these specific deep purple specimens come from the Altai Republic in Russia. The striking violet coloration is a result of Chromium inclusions within the mineral structure. One of the most distinctive physical traits of Iowaite is its extreme softness; it registers at only a 1.5 on the Mohs scale, meaning it is softer than a human fingernail and has a characteristic "waxy" or "soapy" feel to the touch.
