Geology & Composition: Herkimer Diamonds are not actually diamonds, but are exceptionally clear, double-terminated Quartz crystals that formed nearly 500 million years ago within the Little Falls Dolostone. What makes these specific New York specimens special is their rare 18-sided crystal structure and their natural ability to grow with points at both ends, rather than being attached to a host rock base. They began their formation in small, hollow cavities called "vugs" that were created by the slow erosion of ancient seafloor sediments. Because they grew with very little contact with their host rock, they developed incredible geometric precision and clarity. You may often see tiny black specks within these crystals; this is Anthraxolite, an ancient organic hydrocarbon that was trapped during the crystal's growth. With a Mohs hardness of 7.5, they are slightly harder than standard Quartz, further adding to their reputation as the "diamonds" of the mineral world.
