GEOLOGY & COMPOSITION: Topaz is an aluminum silicate mineral containing fluorine, and at 8 on the Mohs scale it is harder than quartz. It forms in granite pegmatites and high-temperature mineral veins, where fluorine-rich fluids allow its crystals to grow. Our Golden Topaz comes from Minas Gerais, Brazil, a region that has been one of the world's most important sources of golden topaz for centuries. It ranges from pale golden yellow through honey and sherry tones, with some pieces carrying a soft orange warmth. Well-formed topaz crystals grow as elongated prisms with fine striations running lengthwise along their faces. Topaz also has a perfect cleavage across the crystal, which means it splits cleanly in one direction and often leaves a smooth, flat face behind. Because these are small raw pieces, many are fragments of larger crystals rather than complete points, so some will show striations or flat cleavage faces and others will have a more irregular, broken surface. These natural variations are part of what makes each raw piece one of a kind.
