Geology & Composition: Astrophyllite is an exceptionally rare potassium iron titanium silicate mineral, named for its radiating, "star-leaf" crystal habit. These "stars" typically form in a metallic palette of bronze, gold, or copper-brown. What makes these specimens particularly striking is the complex mineral matrix they are embedded in:

• The White Matrix: The "stars" are often set against a crisp white or light grey background, which is primarily composed of Albite (a variety of Plagioclase Feldspar) and Nepheline. While both are present in the host syenite rock, the bright white, opaque sections are often Albite, providing a clean "canvas" that makes the metallic luster of the Astrophyllite blades stand out more vividly.
• The Black & Green Inclusions: You will also frequently see deep black or dark forest-green blades or needles throughout the specimen; this is Aegirine (a sodium iron silicate).

Aegirine, Albite, and Astrophyllite often grow together in a beautiful mineralogical harmony.
