GEOLOGY: Ametrine is a geological anomaly that defies the standard "rules" of quartz formation. While macrocrystalline quartz is common, natural Ametrine is found almost exclusively in the Anahí Mine in Bolivia, a remote site tucked into a limestone ridge near the Brazilian border. What you are holding is a single, continuous crystal that developed through a process called sectoral twinning. Millions of years ago, as hydrothermal fluids saturated with silica began to crystallize, a very specific temperature gradient existed across the growing crystal faces.

The violet of the Amethyst and the gold of the Citrine are both caused by trace amounts of iron replacing silicon in the lattice, but they are "built" differently. In the cooler sectors of the crystal, the iron was subjected to natural radiation, creating the "color centers" that produce purple. In the slightly warmer sectors, the iron remained in a state that reflects golden-yellow. Because of this thermal divide, the crystal grew in alternating triangular sectors—if you were to slice a perfect Ametrine crystal crosswise, you would see a six-rayed star of alternating colors. In these raw, unpolished chunks, you can see the rugged, "conchoidal" (shell-like) fractures and the vitreous luster that proves its 7 Mohs hardness.
