Geology of Purple Jade
The term “Jade” can refer to either Jadeite or Nephrite, Purple Jade is always going to be a Jadeite form of Jade. The color ranges from lilac to deep purple, and usually contains white specs from spotted Quartz inclusions.
Both varieties of Jade are most often found in metamorphic rocks, but Jadeite is typically formed by high-pressure metamorphism. High-pressure metamorphism occurs when two tectonic plates collide and one is being pushed underneath the other. This is known as subduction.
Jadeite is often mined as pebbles and boulders in secondary alluvial deposits. It can also be mined at its primary location in rocks and sheets.
Fun fact! Purple jade is technically a rock, not a mineral, and contains minor albite, tremolite, and traces of aegirine and aegirine-augite. That beautiful and rare purple lavender color you see is caused by manganese.
On Mohs scale of mineral hardness Purple Jade grades from a 6 to 7, which means that it’s very durable and hard.
Purple Jade is mined in Turkey, Japan, Russia, and Myanmar.
