Geology & Composition: Petrified Wood is a fossil, not a mineral, and the process that made it is one of the most precise in nature. It begins when a tree falls and is buried quickly, under volcanic ash, river sediment, or mud, somewhere with little oxygen so that the wood cannot decay. Groundwater carrying dissolved silica then seeps through it, and over an immense span of time that silica replaces the organic material cell by cell, filling the structure rather than crushing it. The result is quartz in the exact shape of the original wood, preserving growth rings, grain direction, knots, and occasionally even the cell walls themselves under magnification. The colors come from whatever else was in the water. Iron oxides produce the reds, rusts, and yellows, manganese adds pinks and purples, carbon brings black and gray, and copper can leave green or blue. A single piece can hold several at once, which is why petrified wood is so varied.
Our Petrified Wood comes from Madagascar, which holds extensive fossil forests in Triassic-age deposits, roughly 200 to 250 million years old. These were tropical forests growing when all the continents were still joined as Pangaea, long before the island separated from Africa and India. Madagascan petrified wood is particularly valued for its strong red and rust coloring and for how clearly the original grain survives. At a Mohs hardness of 6.5 to 7, Petrified Wood is as hard as quartz, which is exactly what you would expect given that it is quartz. It takes a high polish and stands up well to handling.

Petrified Wood Meaning and Properties: Petrified Wood is the fossilized remains of an ancient tree, and it is considered an extremely powerful stone precisely because it was once a living being. That origin is the source of everything it is associated with. Grounding is its central quality. Petrified Wood is connected to the Root Chakra and anchors your body and mind, just as a tree is rooted in the earth. Carried on the Element of Earth, it is the ideal stone for feeling genuinely connected to nature, which makes it a particular favorite for anyone living in a city or spending most of their days indoors. It is deeply steadying, helping to calm you and fill you with a sense of security, and it offers strength during difficult stretches less by lifting you than by giving you something solid to stand on.
Patience is the quality this stone embodies more literally than almost any other. Nothing about petrified wood happened quickly. It became what it is molecule by molecule across millions of years, and working with it tends to lengthen your sense of time in a useful way. It is a natural companion for anyone in the middle of a slow process, a long recovery of any kind, or a goal that refuses to arrive on schedule, and a reminder that steady growth counts even when nothing visible is happening. Its gift for Wisdom comes through the Third Eye. Petrified Wood carries the perspective of something that has seen an unimaginable stretch of time, and it is traditionally turned to for accessing ancestral knowledge, past-life work, and the kind of understanding that comes from looking at a situation across years rather than days. Hold it when a problem feels enormous and let it do what deep time does, which is shrink things into proportion.
About the Root Chakra: The Root Chakra, also known as the Muladhara or Base, is located at the bottom of the spine. It is the foundation of our bodies and souls. Your Root Chakra contains your basic life force. When it is balanced, it helps to ground you and provides stability. An open Root Chakra allows energy to flow through your body, and offers a sense of safety and security. The Root Chakra emanates the energy of the Element of Earth. A balanced Root Chakra helps to ground the other chakras, and allows you to feel comfortable in your body and your surroundings.
About the Third Eye Chakra: The Third Eye Chakra, also known as the Anja or Brow Chakra, is located on the forehead. It is associated with wisdom and spirituality. It takes the ability of sight past just what our eyes are able to do, allowing us to be in contact with higher metaphysical and spiritual paths. The Third Eye Chakra allows you to see yourself and others clearly. It connects you with your inner purpose and feelings, and opens you to inspiration and spiritual enlightenment.
HOW TO USE YOUR PETRIFIED WOOD PALM STONE:
- Hold it when something is taking too long. This is the use most specific to petrified wood. A slow recovery, a long project, a goal that refuses to arrive on schedule. Sit with the stone and let a few million years of patience put the timeline back in proportion.
- Use it as a worry stone. A palm stone is sized for the hand for a reason. Running your thumb across the grain while you think gives your hands something to do and your attention something steady to return to.
- Meditate with it for grounding. Hold it in your lap or your palm while you sit. Its weight and its connection to the Root make it well suited to meditation when you need to come back into your body rather than rise out of it.
- Keep it on a desk if you work indoors. Petrified Wood is the stone most associated with reconnecting to nature, which makes it a genuine choice for anyone who spends their days in a city, an office, or in front of a screen.
- Work with it for ancestral and past-life practice. Its long association with deep time and inherited knowledge makes it a traditional companion for ancestor work, lineage reflection, and any practice concerned with where you came from.
- Set it somewhere you are building something slowly. A workshop, a studio, a desk where a long project lives. It suits the work that accumulates rather than the work that finishes.
- Look at the grain. This one is simple and worth saying. Trace the rings with your eye and remember you are looking at a season of growth from a tree that stood before the continents separated. That recognition is most of what this stone is for.
- Cleanse it however you like. At a Mohs hardness of 6.5 to 7 and chemically stable, Petrified Wood is one of the easier stones to care for. Sound, smoke, moonlight, or a Selenite plate all work. A brief rinse is fine, though we recommend drying it thoroughly and keeping it out of prolonged direct sunlight to preserve the depth of the reds.
