Geology & Composition: A Petoskey Stone is not a mineral crystal at all. It is a fossil, specifically the calcified skeleton of a colonial rugose coral called Hexagonaria percarinata, formally described by Dr. Erwin Stumm in 1969. During the Middle Devonian period, roughly 350 million years ago, Michigan sat near the equator beneath a warm, shallow tropical sea. Coral colonies flourished there, each polyp secreting a calcium carbonate cup, or corallite, around itself for protection. Because the colonies grew packed tightly together, the cups pressed into one another and settled into six-sided shapes, which is where the honeycomb pattern comes from. That dark spot at the center of every cell is where the polyp's mouth once sat, later filled with fine sediment that hardened in place. The delicate lines radiating outward are the septa, the internal partitions of the coral's skeleton.

When the reefs died, they were buried and became part of a rock layer known as the Alpena Limestone, within the Traverse Group, which outcrops along the shore of Little Traverse Bay near the city of Petoskey. About two million years ago, Pleistocene glaciers scoured northern Michigan, broke the limestone apart, and carried the fossil corals across the region in glacial till. Waves and streams have been rounding them ever since, which is why Petoskey Stones turn up as smooth beach cobbles far from the bedrock they came from. The stones are primarily calcite, sometimes with quartz, pyrite, or other minerals present in the fossilized cells. Dry and unpolished, a Petoskey looks like an ordinary gray limestone pebble. It is only when the surface is wet or polished, as ours are, that the pattern comes fully to life.

A NOTE ON MICHIGAN'S STATE STONE: The Petoskey Stone was named Michigan's official State Stone on June 28, 1965. The city it is named for takes its name from Chief Ignatius Petosega, and "Pet-o-sega" is often translated as "rays of the rising sun," a phrase that suits the radiating pattern inside every cell remarkably well.

HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR PETOSKEY STONE: At a Mohs hardness of 3 to 4, Petoskey Stone is on the softer side and will scratch or dull if stored loose with harder stones. Keep yours in a pouch or its own compartment. Avoid soaking it, avoid salt water, and skip acidic cleaners, since calcite reacts to acid. A wipe with a soft, slightly damp cloth is all it needs, and a drop of mineral oil will revive the polish if it ever looks tired.
