GEOLOGY: Peach Moonstone is a sophisticated variety of orthoclase feldspar that owes its existence to a high-temperature "slow-cooker" environment deep within Madagascar’s pegmatite veins. Chemically, it is a potassium aluminum silicate that underwent a fascinating process called exsolution as it cooled over millions of years. When this mineral was molten, orthoclase and albite were perfectly blended. However, as the temperature dropped, these two minerals became "unmixed" (similar to how oil and vinegar separate) forming microscopic, alternating layers known as lamellae.

The ethereal light you see, technically called adularescence, occurs when light enters the stone and strikes these ultra-thin internal shingles. Because the layers are roughly the same thickness as the wavelength of light, the light waves interfere with one another, scattering into a soft, billowy "sheen" that appears to roll across the stone’s surface. In this Madagascar variety, the signature peach-to-apricot hue is caused by the presence of trace iron (Hematite or Limonite) that was caught between these layers during the separation process. Polishing these minerals into ergonomic palm stones highlights this internal "unmixing" and showcases a vitreous luster with a solid Mohs hardness of 6.5.
