Geology & Composition: Nuummite is not a single mineral but a rock, formed from two closely related amphiboles, anthophyllite and gedrite, grown together in alternating microscopic layers. Those layers are the entire reason it looks the way it does. Light entering the polished surface reflects between them and returns as flashes of gold, copper, teal, and violet, an effect mineralogists call iridescence or schiller. Because the layers run in a particular direction through the stone, the flashes appear only at certain angles and vanish at others.

Its age is genuinely difficult to grasp. Nuummite formed roughly 3 billion years ago in the Archean, when the Earth’s first continents were still assembling and complex life was more than two billion years away. It began as volcanic rock on an ancient sea floor, then was buried deep in the crust and recrystallized under enormous heat and pressure, which is where the layered amphibole structure came from. Very little rock of that age survives anywhere on the planet.

The name comes from Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, near where the primary deposit sits. The material is collected from a small and remote area along the coast, accessible only seasonally, which is a large part of why genuine Greenlandic Nuummite has always been scarce. At a Mohs hardness of 5.5 to 6, Nuummite is softer than quartz and will scratch if stored loose against harder stones. Keep it in a pouch or its own compartment, and wipe it with a soft dry cloth rather than soaking it.
