HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR MALACHITE: Malachite is soft and requires more care than most stones. At a Mohs hardness of 3.5 to 4 it scratches easily, so store it separately from harder crystals in a pouch or its own compartment. Keep it dry. Do not soak it, leave it in water, or use it in direct-contact crystal elixirs, as Malachite is a copper mineral and prolonged water contact can damage both the polish and the stone. Avoid acids, salt, and household cleaners, and keep it out of prolonged direct sunlight, which can dull the color over time. Wipe it with a soft dry cloth, and cleanse it with sound, smoke, or moonlight rather than water.

Geology & Composition: Malachite is a copper carbonate hydroxide, and copper is the source of everything about it. The green comes directly from the copper in its chemistry rather than from a trace impurity, which is why the color is so saturated and so consistent across every piece. It is a secondary mineral, meaning it does not form from magma but from the weathering of something else. Where copper ore deposits sit near the surface, groundwater carrying dissolved carbon dioxide slowly breaks down the copper minerals beneath and redeposits them in cavities above as Malachite.
