Geology of
Lapis Lazuli
Lapis Lazuli is a striking blue metamorphic rock that contains a multitude of minerals.
Lazurite is its primary component which lends to the stone's vibrant blue color. It is commonly found alongside Calcite, which creates white streaks within the stone, and Pyrite inclusions that provide gold flecks. Additionally, some specimens may contain Sodalite, which often manifests as light blue streaks or spots. It has a luster defined as vitreous, which means its shine is similar to that of glass. Lapis Lazuli is almost always opaque.
Lapis Lazuli’s value is determined by how pure its blue color is. Lapis Lazuli can only truly be considered Lapis Lazuli if it is distinctly blue in color and contains at least 25% Lazurite. The less Lazurite in the stone, the less valuable it is considered. If the stone is more white than blue, it is not as desirable. The most pure blue is therefore the most desirable and expensive.
Lapis Lazuli is formed through a process called contact metamorphism, wherein limestone or marble undergoes intense pressure and heat due to the Earth's shifting plates. As a result of this thermal exposure, Lazurite replaces parts of the host rock and can many times develop within certain bands or layers. Specifically, the heat turns the calcite contained in the original stone into Lazurite, creating the characteristic rich blue of Lapis Lazuli.
The different minerals of Pyrite, Calcite, and Lazurite mix together from magmatic heat flowing into each other in the host rock. These minerals have a lower cooling temperature which allows for them to combine together.
Lapis Lazuli typically registers between a 5 to 5.5 on the Mohs hardness scale - although it can vary between 3 and 6.5. The specimens with a higher calcite content tend to be softer on the scale, and those with greater amounts of pyrite, the higher the stone tends to rank on the scale.
Lapis Lazuli has been used by humans for thousands of years. The largest Lapis Lazuli mine, Sar-i-Sang, in the northern mountains of Afghanistan has been operating for over 6,000 years. Although Lapis Lazuli is commonly found in Afghanistan, it can also be found in Russia, Chile, Pakistan, and the United States, specifically in Colorado and California.
