Geology & Composition: Labradorite is a member of the feldspar family, specifically a plagioclase feldspar made of calcium, sodium, aluminum, and silicon. It forms deep within the earth as magma cools slowly into igneous rocks such as gabbro, basalt, and anorthosite. As it cools, the stone separates into extremely thin, alternating layers of slightly different composition, each far thinner than a human hair. When light enters the stone, it bounces between these microscopic layers and reflects back as brilliant flashes of color. This optical effect is so distinctive that it has its own name, labradorescence. Depending on the angle, a piece can shift from a soft gray or smoky green to a vivid flash of blue, green, gold, copper, or even purple. The stone takes its name from Labrador, Canada, where it was first documented by Europeans in the late 1700s. Our Labradorite comes from Madagascar, which has become one of the world's most important sources of this stone. Madagascar's ancient geology includes large bodies of anorthosite and gabbro, rocks rich in plagioclase feldspar, which create ideal conditions for Labradorite to form in abundance. Madagascan Labradorite is especially admired for its strong, vibrant flash, with many pieces showing broad sweeps of electric blue and green, and some displaying a fuller spectrum of gold, orange, and violet. Each piece is natural and one of a kind, with its own pattern and intensity of flash. To see the full effect, tilt it slowly under a light, since the colors appear and disappear as the angle changes. Labradorite has a hardness of 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale. Because of its layered structure, it can chip or split along those planes if dropped, so we recommend handling it with care.
METAPHYSICAL PROPERTIES:
- Intentions: Personal Power, Protection, Intuition
- Chakra: Third Eye, Throat
- Zodiac: Leo, Sagittarius, Scorpio, Pisces
- Elements: Air
Labradorite Meaning and Properties: Labradorite is a purifying stone that connects you with the energy of light, and its defining quality is that it works on two things at once: it strengthens what is yours and shields it from what is not. Personal Power is where that begins. Labradorite strengthens your natural energies rather than adding something foreign to them, clearing away accumulated baggage so you can recognize your inner self and your true life purpose underneath it. It calms an overactive mind while bringing energy to the imagination, which is an unusual combination and part of why it suits people doing creative or intuitive work.
Its gift for Intuition comes through the Third Eye, the center of inner sight. Labradorite brings you closer to your own intuition and spirituality and magnifies whatever intention you set with it. It also activates the Throat, which is what turns insight into expression, supporting the confidence to actually say what you have come to understand. Carried on the Element of Air, its energy is clarifying and mobile rather than heavy, lifting fog instead of grounding you in place. Protection is the other half. Labradorite is a powerful protective stone that holds a clear boundary around your own energy, shielding you while you do the deeper work, which is why it is so often reached for during periods of transition. It clears and opens all of the Chakras, creating balance within yourself and centering your energy.
Cat Sculpture Meaning: Cats have carried the same associations across almost every culture that kept them. In ancient Egypt they were sacred to Bastet, goddess of the home and protector of the household. The seated upright cat is the exact posture Egyptian artisans carved and cast for thousands of years, alert and composed, a guardian watching over the house. Across folk traditions since, the cat has stood for independence, self-possession, and a particular kind of knowing: the sense that a cat sees something in the room you have not noticed yet.
Labradorite is the natural stone for that posture, because both the cat and the stone are about perception. Labradorite sharpens the Third Eye and brings you closer to what you already sense but have not yet named. The sitting cat is the image of exactly that: an animal doing nothing except paying attention, taking in the whole room without appearing to move at all. Both are protective without being aggressive, holding a boundary simply by being present. And both keep something hidden in plain sight. A cat's attention is never fully readable, and Labradorite's flash only appears when light strikes it at the right angle. Look at either one straight on and you miss most of what is there. Set this piece somewhere it catches changing light, a desk, a windowsill, an entryway, and it will show you something different depending on when you glance at it.
About the Third Eye Chakra: The Third Eye Chakra, also known as the Anja or Brow Chakra, is located on the forehead. It is associated with wisdom and spirituality. It takes the ability of sight past just what our eyes are able to do, allowing us to be in contact with higher metaphysical and spiritual paths. The Third Eye Chakra allows you to see yourself and others clearly. It connects you with your inner purpose and feelings, and opens you to inspiration and spiritual enlightenment.
About the Throat Chakra: The Throat Chakra, also known as the Vishuddha, is located at the base of the throat. It is the chakra that is most associated with communication and truth. When the Throat Chakra is balanced, you are able to connect to your inner truth and gain wisdom. It promotes positive and meaningful communication and conversation. The Throat Chakra is associated with stones like Sodalite, Aquamarine, Blue Apatite, and Blue Lace Agate. If your Throat Chakra is unbalanced or blocked you might have issues with self-expression. Aligning your Throat Chakra helps to connect you to your own thoughts and feelings, and with the people around you.
