Geology of Infinite Stone
‘Infinite Stone’ is the trade name given to Serpentinite specifically found in South Africa. This particular vein of Serpentinite has gathered attention because it is believed to be far superior to other Serpentines.
This stone is made up of Serpentine and Chrysotile which the beige color in this beautiful, banded combination. Serpentine is a general name for a group of closely related metamorphic rocks that are translucent to opaque, waxy, tough, fibrous, and frequently occurring in veins.
These minerals have essentially the same chemistry but sometimes a different structure. They occur in various shades of green and are a magnesium silicate mineral.
When rocks are made up primarily of serpentine with other inclusions, it is referred to as Serpentinite. Chrysotile is part of a family called Sheet Silicates, which is what Serpentine is classified as.
These Serpentinite stones are metamorphic stones that form when hot water reacts with the igneous rock Peridotite.
The whole stone contains Serpentine, but the long fibers of Chrysotile Serpentine are only found in veins. A Vein is a crack within a rock that was later filled by the growth of new minerals.
These fibers of Chrysotile that formed are oriented in specific ways in the vein, with most of the fibers running perpendicular to the vein wall. Chrysotile is able to form only from the metamorphism of peridotite because serpentines can only grow in rocks that are abundant in Magnesium, coupled with silica and a water source.
Chrysotile and other serpentine minerals only grow in abundance in peridotites because they are the only silicate rocks with enough magnesium.
Chrysotile is also a less dangerous form of asbestos, so in its fibrous form, it has the potential to be harmful, but a non-fibrous, tumbled serpentinite is 100% safe to handle and have. Note that Chrysotile itself is not harmful; it must first be processed into asbestos to be dangerous.
On the Mohs scale of mineral hardness Infinite Stone grades between a 3 to 6. This makes it a relatively soft stone that can easily be scratched.
Infinite Stones main producing mines are in South Africa, but the amount isn’t much, and is considered a rare stone. There is a newer find in India that has more recently started mining this stone.
