Geology: Chrysoprase is a cryptocrystalline variety of Chalcedony, a "microcrystalline" form of silica. While many green gemstones like Emerald get their color from Chromium, Australian Chrysoprase is geologically unique because its signature "apple-green" glow comes from trace amounts of Nickel. This stone is a secondary mineral formed through the intense chemical weathering of nickel-bearing rocks called serpentinites. Over millions of years in the arid Australian outback, silica-saturated groundwater reacted with these rocks, dissolving the nickel and redepositing it into fractures and cavities as a silicate mineral called Garnierite.

Because Chrysoprase is "cryptocrystalline," its structure consists of an incredibly dense, interwoven matrix of microscopic crystals. This is what gives the stone its "juicy," semi-translucent appearance. You will often notice brown veins or patches within these tumbled stones; this is the Goethite or Ironstone matrix. This brown material is the original host rock that the Chrysoprase grew inside millions of years ago. Finding this matrix included in the stone is a hallmark of genuine Australian material, providing a beautiful, earthy contrast to the vivid green silica.
