Geology of Chalcedony
Most Chalcedony specimens contain anywhere between 1-20% of the silica mineral Moganite. As the specimen slowly ages, the Moganite is converted into quartz. It forms from water silica gel at fairly low temperatures. The silica is usually released from the weathering of rocks that initially didn’t contain silica, so the formation of Chalcedony takes place fairly close to the Earth’s surface.
It can be found in weathering volcanic rocks as well as sedimentary rocks. It can also oftentimes form with Agate. It is quite rare to find Chalcedony in igneous or metamorphic rocks, and usually, it is primarily only found in veins or cracks that have been percolated by rising silica-rich fluid that is warm in temperature.
Chalcedony can also be found in fossils as a petrifying agent in wood and bones. Chalcedony is able to form in geodes as well.
