Caribbean Calcite is a combination of the minerals Blue Calcite, White Aragonite, Brown Aragonite, and Blue Aragonite. It has wavy marble-like appearance in soft blue, white, and brown colors. This pattern resembles the calming waves of a tropical sea with sandy beaches.

Calcite is one of the most common forms of calcium carbonate on Earth. It is an extremely common rock-forming mineral that can be found in sedimentary, igneous, and metamorphic rocks. Geologists consider Calcite a ubiquitous mineral because it can be found everywhere.

It can form by direct precipitation from calcium-rich waters. As the concentration increases or the water amount decreases, Calcite crystals are able to form. 

Organisms also use Calcite to form their shells or other structural elements. Calcite is also a constituent of limestone and marble. Calcite forms in limestone as deposits in caves from calcium carbonate precipitation. When limestone is put under a great amount of heat and pressure, it is transformed into metamorphic rock marble. 

Depending on the level of metamorphism the marble goes through will determine the size of the Calcite crystals that form. The more intense metamorphism, the larger the Calcite crystals.

Aragonite is calcium carbonate and is identical chemically to Calcite, but it was formed under more limited geological conditions. 

It is a relatively unstable mineral and can alter into Calcite. It is easy to distinguish between Aragonite and Calcite by Argaonite’s absence of rhombohedral cleavages. 

This mineral can be found in an oxidized zone of ore deposits formed at low temperatures close to the surface of the Earth. It’s possible to find Aragonite in caves forming as stalactites, near hot springs as well as in mineral veins. It often forms in prismatic crystals with a radiating habit, which is why we see long, tube-like pieces sticking out of the crystal. 

When Aragonite behaves in this way it is referred to as Aragonite “sputniks”. This mineral is also important for the shells of marine life and other marine invertebrates. 

To turn Aragonite into calcite is still an unknown physiologic process, however, what little is known about that process is that these marine animals are able to secrete minerals from the water that would normally only yield calcite. The process in which Aragonite is formed in this way is still being studied.

On Mohs scale of mineral hardness Caribbean Calcite grades as a 3 to 3.5, meaning that it can be scratched easily.

Caribbean Calcite was discovered in Pakistan in 2019, making it a very recent find. It is considered to be a rare stone as it is only found in Pakistan, and once all of it has been mined, there won’t be any Caribbean Calcite left as this is the only location where it is known to exist.
