Geology & Composition: Hematite is a heavy iron oxide mineral and serves as the primary ore of iron, consisting of nearly 70% iron by weight. While hematite typically crystallizes in the rhombohedral system, the botryoidal (from the Greek botrus for "grapes") or reniform (kidney-like) habit seen in these Moroccan specimens is a spectacular display of radial-fibrous growth. These pieces are sourced from the iron-rich tectonic veins of the High Atlas Mountains and the Taouz region, where mineral-saturated fluids have moved through limestone or volcanic host rocks for millions of years.

The formation process is a result of slow precipitation within cavities or "vugs" in the Earth's crust.
