Geology & Composition: Agate is a banded variety of chalcedony, a microcrystalline form of quartz. Brazil is the world's most significant source of large agate nodules, the majority of them mined in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, where ancient basalt lava flows of the Paran‡ Basin cooled with gas bubbles trapped inside them. Over millions of years, silica rich groundwater worked its way into those cavities and deposited chalcedony layer by layer along the walls, each band recording a slightly different mineral chemistry as conditions shifted. When deposition finally slowed enough for individual crystals to grow, the remaining open space at the center filled with clear quartz points, which is the crystal pocket you see at the heart of this piece. A slab like this one is cut straight through the nodule so that the entire growth history reads from the outer rind inward, then polished on the front face to bring out the color and translucency. Both agate and quartz measure 6.5 to 7 on the Mohs scale, making this a durable piece for open display.
PLEASE NOTE: The front face is polished and the reverse and edges are left in their natural cut finish. Natural voids, druzy pockets, and variations in the banding are characteristic of agate slabs and are part of what makes each piece unique. Display stand not included.
