Geology of Aragonite
Although Aragonite and Calcite are identical chemically, they are different minerals that formed under different conditions.
Aragonite is less stable than Calcite and can easily alter into Calcite over time. One way to tell Aragonite and Calcite apart is that Aragonite lacks rhombohedral cleavages.
Geologically speaking, Aragonite is found in an oxidized zone of ore deposits that formed close to the Earth's surface at low temperatures. This mineral can also be found in caves, near hot springs, and in mineral veins.
When Aragonite crystallizes, it often forms in prismatic crystals with a radiating habit - meaning that the crystals look like long, tube-like pieces sticking out from the main body of the crystal. When Aragonite behaves in this way, it is referred to as "Aragonite sputniks".
This mineral is also important for the shells of marine life and other marine invertebrates. To turn Aragonite into calcite is still an unknown physiologic process, however, what little is known about that process is that these marine animals are able to secrete minerals from the water that would normally only yield calcite. The process in which Aragonite is formed in this way is still being studied.
